Do you have what it takes to be a PlattFormer?

My department meeting was a bit ... unusual ... today. My team traipsed over to the web designer room for our meeting, and as we turned the corner to their hallway we were hit by a blast of hot air. It was almost as if we had walked into a jungle.

While everyone was ready, the meeting didn't start. We continued to wait while the room got hotter and hotter, filling up with the heat of 30-some people.

Caring enough to be creative

John Updike said, "Any activity becomes creative when the doer cares about doing it right, or doing it better." I'd have to agree with Mr. Updike, especially when it comes to the work we do here at PlattForm.

A perfect example of this concept in action could be seen at our annual company meeting on Friday. Each department was given 10 minutes to deliver a brief synopsis of what they had accomplished during the past year and what goals they had for the future.

Internarama!

By Becca Breithaupt

I am the first of my college friends to get a “real” job. So while my buddies prepared for a ridiculous summer of partying, I was feeling the pressure of becoming a full-blown adult. Despite that – for the last month, I’d been anxiously awaiting the start of my internship.

“It’s not my fault”

“It’s not fair!” My 18-year-old daughter Inga’s tear-streaked face contorted as she related the tale. “I was only speeding because I felt like I was going to faint and I just had to get off the street as quickly as possible. That cop was such a jerk. . .” See, Inga had just received her fourth speeding ticket.

“It’s not fair!” How many times have you heard that phrase? (I just Googled the phrase and came up with over 2 million hits!) As I was sputtering a response, the book QBQ flashed into focus.

The Wide World of the Web

Internet technology is advancing more quickly than most people can keep up with. It wasn't long ago that video first appeared as a major force on the Web, and now with the popularity of sites like YouTube, it's a mainstay. And now Internet marketing companies are leveraging this valuable resource.

It's a lunch date!

Nothing goes together better than good company and good food!

Lunchtime at PlattForm used to be a time of hanging out with your fellow coworkers. However, after a year of explosive growth and a sea of new faces in the halls, we know fewer people and spend less time socializing over a hearty meal.

The Interactive Content Development (ICD) team pulled an "Anna Leonowens" on you and decided we should be "getting to know you, getting to know all about you!"

“You mean I have to start all over again?”

A career college student bonded with her admissions representative. The admissions representative had been counseling the student about curriculum choices, class schedules and school life in general. They became friends. The student trusted the rep.

But then, one day the rep left . . . the student felt abandoned . . . and a few weeks later, the student, frustrated about having to 'start all over again', quit.

Bringing the human element into your PR efforts

What involves a reader in a story, be it fiction or non-fiction, are interesting characters or people to whom they can relate. And, the same is true for the public relations message of your school.

I have a friend who is a news bureau chief for a major metropolitan daily newspaper. I asked for his input to help me identify the best way to pitch stories to reporters. His response was immediate:

“You have to make your story about people.”

Freakishly fun

I have won an Emmy. Yes, riveting … I know. My one claim to fame. So I put out a call to my fellow co-workers to see what they claim as their, uh, claim to fame. Here now is a very random, somewhat obscure representation of the people I work with. At one point or another, my co-workers admit to:

What is SEO, anyway?

SEO is one of those mythical terms whispered in quiet conference hall corners and business meetings, it's meaning too obtuse and mysterious to be said in a loud voice. Not at PlattForm. It's our job as a full-service advertising and marketing agency to have mastered the meaning and use of such terms.
