Always Be Negotiating

The 1992 movie Glengary Glen Ross featured a memorable cameo from Alec Baldwin driving home a crucial goal for salespeople with the following quote: “A-B-C. A-Always, B-Be, C-Closing. Always be closing, always be closing.” (That’s really the only quote I can print from that film on this web site without working in blue.)

I’ve been to paradise … but I’ve never been to me.

What was your resolution for 2007? Anything riveting? I decided that 2007 was going to be the year that I am better to myself … all the way across the board. Whether it’s slamming the snooze alarm more than once in order to feel like I got a good night’s sleep … or buying real peanut butter instead of reduced fat PB, I’m on a goodwill mission to myself.

PlattForm treats me very well and vice versa. But when it comes to me taking the time to be good to me … I usually drop the ball. Whoops. It happens.

And I know you feel my pain.

Colleges should plan ahead for media inquiries

We’ve got a pretty unique Public Relations department at PlattForm. Not only do we handle PR efforts for career schools and four-year institutions, we also serve as journalists for two publications produced by PlattForm. Juggling the responsibilities of a journalist and a PR professional gives us some interesting insight about how colleges deal with the media.

If other professions were like web design …

I was having a conversation with a coworker today about how different web design is from any other profession. (At the time, we were working on a hack for a hack to make a video display properly in the new version of Internet Explorer.) So I started thinking: What if other professions were like web design? What would the world be like? Here's some speculation.

A little bit softer now … a little bit louder now …

It’s really, really quiet in here. You can ask anyone in this part of the building: Print makes a LOT of noise. But right now it’s all paper-rustling, keyboard-clicking, silent wheels turning. Work is beginning on Key Magazine and the new Career College Central. There are plenty of specs to do – some for current clients, others for clients we’re trying to bring on board.

The power of the postcard

You know what I’d like to see more people in the career education business utilize – postcards. Yeah, I said postcards and I mean it too. It’s one of those advertising avenues that I believe can be very successful, but only if used in the right situations.

If you’re trying to generate an immediate response from a perspective student, either through a BRC, phone call or e-mail, then the standard letter package should be your first choice. In that situation, I’d recommend the standard letter package every time because a postcard just doesn’t elicit a quick response.

Creative clutter knows no bounds

I cleaned my desk today. I know … I know … alert the media. And while I did not stumble across Jimmy Hoffa, I did manage to locate a misplaced Starbucks gift card and a half-eaten packet of peanut M&Ms. (Trust me, they are half-eaten NO more.)

So I did a quick scan of the rest of PlattForm to see if organized chaos is running rampant – or whether it’s just me.

Here now are my official findings …

The heroes of media

On this season’s breakout hit NBC series Heroes a large cast of characters are just discovering they each have individualized superpowers of fantastical varieties. It caused me to think about the people I work with in Media. (Also, I was multitasking when I wrote this, and Heroes happened to be on in the background.) Working in such a large department, there are so many talented people who each bring a special ability to our department.

Conflict of interest

This is a term I've heard a lot lately. There's a misconception that if an agency is handling your Internet CPL campaigns, that it's a conflict of interest for them to handle your web marketing campaigns (SEO, PPCs to their web site, etc.). I'd like to put that misconception to rest.
